Blogger Spotlight: Countdown to Vancouver Fashion Week A/W 2015

In a city finding its legs in the global stage of Fashion, the collaborations of eager young talent is a palpable one. Fostered by Vancouver’s premiere Design schools, and jettisoned out into international awareness at Vancouver Fashion Week – whose spotlights burn brighter, drawing a wider audience each year – emerging designers depend on the local community of stylists, boutique buyers and style savvy street stalkers to build a narrative around their creations and give them life. In this spirit, and with Vancouver Fashion Week’s Autumn Winter 2015 season just around the corner, we invited fourteen of Vancouver’s style set to don the wears of some of our most exciting local Design talent: Sara Armstrong, Alex S Yu, Evan Clayton, Connally McDougall, Jessica Jeehyun Lee, Taranjit K Cheema, Le Monde Gris, Some Product, and Grandi’s Atelier. In the sprawling sunlit space of Blanche Macdonald Centre’s Atelier Campus, from whence many of Vancouver’s most anticipated Fashion offspring has sprung, bloggers, street style snappers and design scene doyennes alike gathered to incorporate last season’s coveted pieces into …

Interview – Hong Kiyoung – Prelude to VFW – F/W 2015

What can we expect from the Hong Kiyoung label for Fall/Winter 2015? Tell us the story behind this collection. “There is only one goal in our brand – making the most elegant streetwear. In this season, I got inspiration from the homeless people who I met on Main Street in Vancouver. There was one homeless guy who was the most inspiring to me, and he really was making a graceful elegant figure and even with a gracious manner. After I saw him, I started to research how they dress to make the most graceful homeless look. Certainly it is not that we are homeless. However I think there are some aspects of ‘graceful’ or ‘elegance’ in them. I wanted to challenge myself to make this look as great as others.” We understand that new Artists influencing the contemporary arts are an inspiration point for you. Whose work is resonating with you right now? “Designer Haider Ackermann, who showcased at Paris Fashion Week & Salvador Dali.” You’re a huge fan of vibrant, experimental prints and patterns. …

VFW – S/S 2015 Nostalgia – Hong Kiyoung – Elegant Saboteur Collection

Already a house hold name in Hong Kong, the Seoul native Hong Kiyoung is now making waves on North American and European runways! This young designer first broke out onto the fashion scene printing t-shirts and clothing, and has since seen his label erupt worldwide following the launch of his first menswear collection in 2012. Hong Kiyoung has translated his graphic experiments into the electric prints and patterns we’ve seen and sought after in each of his collections. With ‘Elegant Saboteur’ Hong Kiyoung stayed true to his ‘Minimalistic Exaggeration with street’ esthetic, bringing together strong structured men’s and womenswear in wools, knits, sheers and leather with bold and colourful graphics undoubtedly evoked from contemporary arts. The collection was complete from head to toe featuring bandana inspired, tie-back base-ball caps, sunnies with rainbow hued mirrored lens and statement footwear, a show-stopping collaboration we are ecstatic to see more from on Vancouver’s runways. This provocative international designer has certainly caught our attention! We are anxious to see what he unveils this Fall/Winter season at Vancouver Fashion Week …
